The just-concluded Australian Open only underlined the fact that Indian tennis still depends on the old warhorses, Leander Paes (32) and Mahesh Bhupathi (31), to deliver results that can be viewed with justifiable pride. Never mind that their success was only in the doubles. The fact remains that there was little else to cheer about from India's perspective.
Yes, there is a player called Sania Mirza who climbed to No. 31 in 2005, a meteoric rise that triggered media hysteria that bordering on voyeurism. The fact that no other Indian woman had achieved anything of such significance on the pro circuit meant that with each victory, Sania set a new benchmark. Her progress to the fourth round at the US Open last year was sufficient for pundits to predict greater success and even earn her a Padma Shri award!
